TSU’s football program was established in 1912, and it didn’t take long for it to develop into a powerhouse. Under the leadership of coaches like John Merritt, who guided the team from 1963 to 1983, Tennessee State became a dominant force in college football. Merritt’s tenure, in particular, is noted for his incredible 174 victories and seven Black College National Championships. His teams were known for their high-powered offenses and strong defenses, creating a ripple effect in HBCU football that still resonates today.
