In China, during the Han Dynasty around the 2nd and 3rd centuries BCE, a game called ‘Cuju’ was played with a leather ball filled with feathers. This game involved kicking the ball through a goal, typically a small hole in a piece of silk cloth stretched between two poles.

The Greek game ‘Episkyros’ and the Roman game ‘Harpastum’ involved teams attempting to advance a ball past the opposing team’s territory.
